Maplebrook Elementary School
Greg was very active always running, jumping, bike
riding or throwing a ball in the back yard. At Maplebrook Elementary School, Grades 1-5, Greg wrote in his journals about
liking sports and not liking vegetables, wanting to
play outside all day and having longer recesses. In first grade he wrote that if he were the teacher he would
have recess
all day and that no matter how hard he practiced and wrote
his ABC’s
they still looked messy. He thought his family was kind and fun.
During the first days of 1st grade in Naperville in 1987, we
(Mike, baby Chris and mom) all walked Greg to school. We could not bear
for him to be gone from us for all day so he came home for lunch for about 3
days. He then very nicely let us know everyone eats lunch at school and he really
did not have time to walk home and eat and walk back. So we bought him a lunch
box and that was that.
Greg was shocked when I told him there wasn’t a Santa.
He was disappointed in the world and his parents for lying to him; he shed a
tear, but then returned to the basement to play with his brothers. He was in
third grade, December 89. After that he took pride in knowing what his brothers
did not. Over the years he would call Milt and I Mr. and Mrs. Claus.
Greg loved to fill out those silly Mad Libs books
when he was at Maplebrook. He read all the sports stories by Matt Christopher. He
read all the Battle of the Books selections. During the summer he would read
novels to take a break and earn more Nintendo time. As he grew, he became
more interested
in sports and had lots of journal entries about da Bears, Sox, Blackhawks
and Bulls. He thought he might want to be a sports announcer, but that
soon changed to being a football player. Greg's favorite subjects were math and
reading. He was
on the Winning Battle of the Books team in fourth grade and on the team in
5th grade as well. He began playing trombone in 4th grade.
Greg played basketball, soccer and baseball. He loved baseball and
his
4th grade team won his division. He was in Indian Guides and Cub Scouts. Some of
Greg's Maplebrook buddies were Brad D.,
Todd L., Tim H., Brad B., Pat Mc., Matthew M., Spencer R. ...
