During Labor Day weekend, September 4, 2004, the Marching Illini Trombones dedicated a tree to Greg on the University of Illinois campus. Greg's friend Jersey was instrumental in coordinating the effort between the band students and the university. Jersey and Wally organized the event.
The tree is at the corner of 4th and Gregory Streets near the
Armory. Over the years the trombone section would meet under the tree for their
sectional rehearsal. Why play inside the armory when you can play outside??
The tree was very familiar to Greg which makes it all the more special.
On September 4th Jersey, Wally, many trombone players past
and present, Jenny and the Vasich family gathered around the tree. Jersey began
by telling a funny, happy Greg story, and was followed by several other friends
and their Greg stories. The plaque was read and the then the bones played
a couple songs in Greg's honor.
The plaque reads:
"In loving memory of Gregory S. Vasich - an
irreplaceable friend and
member of the Marching Illini, whose enthusiasm for life, love, and
music has inspired us all."
We have since learned that most sites on campus are dedicated to a class or
a club.
Greg is the only one to have his own tree!
Thank you Jersey and Wally and all the Marching Illini for establishing this wonderful tribute for Greg.
